Plant Details
Arecanut, also known as betel nut, is cultivated for its seeds, which are commonly used in traditional chewing practices. It thrives in tropical climates with temperatures between 20–35°C and prefers well-drained, loamy soil rich in organic matter. The trees require consistent rainfall or irrigation and grow well in shaded or partially shaded conditions. Arecanut is harvested after 6–8 years of planting, with nuts processed for commercial use. Besides chewing, it is used in religious ceremonies and traditional medicine. Regular weeding, pruning, and disease management ensure healthy growth. Arecanut cultivation provides significant income to farmers in countries like India, contributing to rural economies. However, its consumption has health implications, necessitating moderated use.
