ABTEC is a pioneering company in India, having established one of the country’s first production units for microbial inoculant-based bio inputs. Commercial production began in 1993 in Kottayam, Kerala, with an initial focus on manufacturing Bio Fertilizers such as Azospirillum, Azotobacter, Rhizobium and Phosphobacteria. Over time, ABTEC expanded its product line to include Bio Control Agents, Bio Pesticides, Bio Stimulants and Organic Manure. Today, the company offers soil and water analysis together with a comprehensive range of Bio Inputs and actively engages in the R&D of Herbal Repellents, Natural Home Care Products, Bio Remediation Solutions, Personal Care Products, and Probiotic Animal Feed Supplements.
The Story of Our Beginning
In 1991, when Bio Fertilizers were relatively unknown and conventional farming using chemical fertilizers and pesticides were predominant, a young ambitious man from Kerala, K.J. Jacob, met Dr. D. Clarson, an agricultural scientist from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore. This encounter marked the beginning of lifelong journey and later ABTEC evolved. Together, Jacob and Dr. Clarson established their first laboratory in a small room at Jacob’s home in Kottayam, Kerala. Despite numerous trials and failures after failures they finally succeeded in developing their first bio fertilizer and that product was Azospirillum. Lacking the necessary infrastructure to maintain a sterile microbiology lab, which led to contaminations beyond control which resulted in huge financial loses, Jacob sought for industrial land near Kottayam to start a bio fertilizer unit. Later on Jacob secured a plot in the newly developed Industrial Area in Poovanthuruth, Kottayam. With confidence in their product but insufficient working capital and funds to build a lab cum production unit, Jacob pledged his own house to secure a loan from the Kerala Financial Corporation (KFC). In 1993, ABTEC was officially founded. The company’s first Bio Fertilizer manufacturing unit was inaugurated on July 14th 1993, by the then Minister of State for Agriculture, Shri. S. Krishna Kumar. This marked the beginning of ABTEC’s journey, with the rest becoming part of its rich history.
