Plant Details
Betelvine is a perennial vine grown for its aromatic leaves, widely used in traditional practices and rituals in South Asia. It thrives in warm, humid climates with temperatures between 20–35°C and requires fertile, well-drained loamy soil rich in organic matter. Betelvine is grown under shade with support structures like trellises. The leaves are consumed fresh with arecanut and lime, forming the popular betel quid, and are also used in medicinal applications for their antimicrobial and digestive properties. Betelvine cultivation requires regular irrigation, pest management, and pruning to maintain leaf quality. It is a labor-intensive but high-value crop, supporting the livelihoods of small farmers in many regions.
