Plant Details

Cowpea, also known as black-eyed pea, is a drought-tolerant legume valued for its edible seeds and leaves. It thrives in warm climates with temperatures between 25–35°C and grows well in well-drained, sandy or loamy soils. Cowpea is commonly used as a cover crop to improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. Its seeds are consumed as a protein-rich food in soups, stews, and salads, while the young leaves serve as a nutritious vegetable. The crop matures within 60–90 days, making it ideal for short growing seasons. Cowpea cultivation requires minimal inputs and is a crucial source of nutrition and income in arid and semi-arid regions. It plays a vital role in sustainable farming systems worldwide.
